Accenture's work for clients often necessitates travel so the company needed to find better ways of working with the technology they already have and smarter ways of planning staff travel. The aim was to make sure world class service can be delivered, as well as reducing the impact on the environment. Approximately 70% of Accenture’s environmental footprint is currently accounted for by travel.

Key drivers for implementing travel interventions were:

Results / benefits:

  • Over a third of staff work flexibly and 90 percent of those who apply for formal flexible working arrangements (e.g. part time working) have their application approved
  • 65 percent of flexible workers stated that “flexible working is a strong motivator for staying at Accenture”
  • The visual conferencing facility saved 1502 tonnes of C02 globally in FY08 and millions of dollars due to money saved on flights
  • In the half year Sep 09 – Mar 10, air spend have decreased by 40% and car travel by 10% compared with the prior period
  • Through FY09 globally, Accenture avoided more than 6,000 Metric Tons of CO2-e by using Telepresence
  • Smart Work Arrangements program resulted in a 25 percent reduction in travel and related expenses
  • Providing new technologies as alternatives to travel, including Telepresence and Round table have saved 531 tonnes of carbon in the UK & Ireland
  • In 2009, Accenture reduced its quarterly emissions from travel by approximately 1,930 tonnes carbon equivalent (30 percent). In particular, air travel was reduced by 33 percent.
