Mayday webinar on alternatives to travel: Tuesday 24 January 2012
Time: 15:00 - 16:00
In November Business in the Community, Microsoft, Nokia, Nuffield, Regus and Vodafone launched ‘Anywhere Working’ consortium backed by the Department for Transport.
The consortium has been formed to help British employers understand the benefits of providing flexible working environments and to enable employees to access the tools that they need to work in a more flexible way. The founding members of the Anywhere Working Consortium have also pledged to educate organisations on the available technologies and resources to support the ability to work away from offices and promote alternatives to travel.
On January 16, the Consortium will launch an online hub of resources for organisations, which will include training, trial technology, best practice case studies and special offers on products provided by the consortium members. This is to be followed by a series of interactive events for employers and employees during Anywhere Working Week, which will take place in February 2012. During this week the consortium will announce a series of mechanisms for measuring and bench-marking the cost, time and carbon savings achieved as a result of organisations embracing Anywhere Working.
This webinar is a part of the campaign and will present the case for Anywhere Working', by demonstrating true benefits achieved by different organisations.
So join us and find out how you can work anywhere!

Mayday Webinar - ways2work: Thursday 31 March 2011
Travelling sustainably for, to and from work is enabling organisations to reduce costs, be more productive and make more efficient use of resources. Business, people and the environment all benefit.
UK businesses therefore have an important role to play in helping to improve this – and there are real benefits of doing so.
In today’s world full of economic uncertainty, the need for cost control and efficiency has never been greater. Businesses need to become leaner and more effective – more so now than ever before and we are all looking for new ways to do this. Something that is not being readily adopted by many businesses involves how we work and how we travel on a daily basis. It’s become far too habitual and we are missing opportunities which is costing us financially, socially and environmentally.
- Transport accounts for 29% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions (2006 Netcen Data). It is also the only major sector in which carbon emissions continue to rise.
- Almost 70% of UK transport emissions come from road transport and more than half of that is from cars. Personal car travel is the single biggest source of personal CO2 emissions in the UK (DECC 2009) and commuting and business travel accounts for 38% of this.
- Road congestion is estimated to cost the UK over £20 billion annually (BCC The Congestion Question 2008)
Driving for work is the most dangerous work-related activity performed by employees in the UK. Around 20 people are killed and 220 seriously injured each week in crashes while using the road to drive to, from or for work.
- The average UK commuter spends 47 working days a year commuting (almost one working day per week)
The ways2work webinar, with speakers from BITC and businesses already reaping the benefits of reducing work-related travel impacts, will show you how travelling more sustainably and using technology as an alternative to travel will enable your business to:
-
Reduce costs, improve resource efficiency
-
Reduce absence, improve productivity
-
Reduce carbon emissions, improve your reputation

Mayday Webinar - Green and Efficient IT for modest budgets: Thursday 25 November 2010
ICT products play a huge part in many business operations and they have a much larger impact on the environment than many may initially think.
Optimising efficient use of ICT will not only improve productivity but will reduce carbon emissions, unnecessary travel, and costs. Organisations do not have to have a huge budget in order to invest in more efficient technologies or improve their use of existing equipment to reduce inefficiencies and carbon emissions.

IBM Summit at Start: Wednesday 8 September to Thursday 16 September 2010
Moving business towards a sustainable future
The IBM Summit at Start brought together key thought leaders in business, government and academics. By recognising that sustainability needs to be economically viable – as well as socially and environmentally desirable - the summit identified some of the challenges ahead, considered how to overcome them and explored opportunities to lead business towards a sustainable future.
Paving the way to a smarter future
IBM has been proud to host this inspirational gathering. Held over nine days from September 8th - 16th 2010, this has been an exclusive opportunity to engage with inspirational speakers and consider the challenges we face in bringing about environmental, social and economic sustainability.
Inspiring. Engaging. Challenging.
Keynote speakers addressed vital issues such as how to create smarter cities, energy, transport, people and skills, youth, supply chains, finance, information and business. This was a valuable opportunity for people to join in the debate and share ideas on how to build a sustainable future with the emphasis on the role of business in leading change.

Green and Efficient IT: Friday 16 July 2010
Hosted by Accenture and supported by NBTN, this BITC workshop looks at investing in energy efficient IT and sustainable use of existing equipment to reduce energy usage and business travel.
ICT products play a huge part in many business operations and they have a much larger impact on the environment than many may initially think.
Optimising efficient use of ICT will not only improve productivity but will reduce carbon emissions and costs. Investing in new ICT products such as teleconferencing and telepresence will also significantly reduce a company's business travel thus further saving carbon emissions and also reducing the amount of time staff spend travelling to and from meetings.
