Engage your stakeholders and organisational resources
Getting ‘buy in’ from key stakeholders - including employees – is essential to the success of your sustainable travel plan.
For Steering Group members, these included managers, teams and consultants working in a wide range of functional areas, including:
-
Transport Strategy
-
Travel management
-
Inter-disciplinary travel/mobility teams (HR, Travel, MIS, Facilities)
-
Property/Accommodation
-
Environment teams
-
Facilities management
-
Occupational health and safety
-
HR
-
Wellbeing
-
CSR/Sustainability
-
Supply chain management
-
Employees (via focus groups and surveys)
-
Senior site/business unit management
-
Group-level senior management
-
Executive boards
-
Finance
-
Business performance (risk and reporting)
For Steering Group members, these same engaged individuals also became involved in developing, implementing, managing and gathering feedback from the sustainable travel initiative. The support network can also encompass individuals in other functions (e.g. security teams), networks (e.g. environmental champions) and those working with external organisations (e.g. environmental and transport coordinators working with local councils).
In difficult economic times, budgets for sustainable travel initiatives are likely to be highly restricted: either they will be non-existent or made available only in response to a demonstrable business need. It is therefore important to be able to make a strong business case for any financial resources required.
