Arrange training

Teleworkers and their managers require training in this new way of working. The reason this training is needed and the topics that might be covered are described in a paper from training company Knowledge Ability.

In addition to the training topics described there:

  • Organisations are increasingly concerned about the security of their information at home, and in mobile workers' laptop computers. Data security may therefore also be a topic for special processes and training
  • Teleworkers may need reliably to know how to back up files on data storage devices

Arrange for continuous evaluation

This ways2work site provides access to an accumulation of experience on how to get telework right. However, we only have twenty or so years' experience of working this way, against centuries of working in an office. And every organisation will come up against its own issues. So we strongly suggest that planners, managers and teleworkers adopt a "we don't know what we don't know" approach. Treat the introduction of teleworking as an exploration. You can plan so far, but only so far. There will be things you will discover, and problems that you can solve, that will be unique to your organisation.

The way to do this is to get everyone involved in commenting, reporting and discussing how teleworking is working. Find a way for everyone to share their experiences in an open no-blame manner. Include mangers and teleworkers and technical staff: indeed everyone whose work patterns have changed. Put "How are we getting on with teleworking?" onto every team’s meeting agenda.

The actnow flex site presents a practical "Review and Improvement Checklist" suitable for periodic reviews of the state of teleworking in the organisation.
