Rethinking cars in business

Cars are often essential for the business traveller. Alternatives to travel and public transport can replace many trips however the car may sometimes be the only viable solution.

Whether you are responsible for purchasing or managing a car fleet, or drive for business, there is something you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.

Fuel is a significant cost for fleets. If you can manage fuel consumption more efficiently you will manage costs and emissions more effectively. The way you drive also makes a difference. So whether you drive a 4x4 or a Mini, there’s something you can be to reduce your footprint.

Lloyds Banking Group (when HBOS)
car fleet improved from 172.56 grams CO2 per km in January 2006 to 161.00 grams CO2 per km in December 2008
Environment Agency
in 2009/10 annual business mileage has been reduced by over 20% from 2005/6 baseline. This equates to 385,000 pa, saving over £40,000 pa in running costs alone
E.ON
reduced business mileage by 29% against a target of 25% in 2009. In real terms this is a reduction from 1.86 million to 1.32 million miles
BT
has reduced business travel by 20% between 2006 and 2008. A direct shuttle bus from the station to the BT Adastral Park primarily for business travel use has more paid for itself as well as providing a valuable commuter service for employees on site

car sharing scheme saw business mileage drop by around 10,000 miles in the last year
