Business travel by rail

On average, travelling by train results in a quarter of the greenhouse gas emissions produced by travelling the same distance by plane. Eurostar emits a tenth of the CO2 of flying to its core destinations see Eurostar Tread Lightly Programme

On business, train travel can be productive, with room to work. Many routes on the UK mainland rail system have facilities on-board trains to assist you with your journey. On board Wi-Fi and charger/power outlets for laptop computers are examples of this.

Here are some tips for travelling by rail:

  • Book in advance (try these sites):
  • Single tickets are often cheaper than a return
  • Be flexible and travel off peak
  • Split tickets may be cheaper
  • Review entitlements to first class travel. Remember first class can be cheaper
  • Railcards could save you a third on costs
  • If you travel regularly on the same route a season ticket may be cheaper.
  • If you use a TMC book tickets online
LSI Architects have been working hard to increase rail use for business travel – it rose 43.7% in 2008 and further 30.2% in 2009
