Encouraging cycling and walking for work
ways2work has produced an advisory note called Cycling in Business which is a complete guide for employers wishing to support and encourage more cycling in relation to journeys for work. This document can be accesses in the Members' area and we recommend it as your starting point.
The Department for Transport has developed the Cycle to Work Guarantee Scheme (C2WGS) to help overcome some of the barriers to getting more people cycling to work. The C2WGS is hosted by ways2work and can be found here.

There is a lot of detailed information in toolkit form for you to download.
There are also downloadable maps which you can tailor to your local area and to your staff’s needs.
The Guarantee requires businesses to commit to providing the following five facilities to their employees and offers guidance on how to do this:
-
Storing
Secure, safe, and accessible bike parking facilities for all staff who want them
-
Changing
Good quality changing and locker facilities for all staff who want them
-
Buying
Offset the cost of cycling equipment and save on the tax through the ‘Cycle to Work scheme’
-
Repairing
Bike repair for cyclists on or near site
-
Inspiring
Training, reward and incentive programmes to achieve targets for more cycling
"At E.ON we offer all of the facilities and services laid out in the five point Cycle to Work Guarantee scheme at the majority of our sites. However by signing up to the Guarantee we are committing to going one step further by aiming to offer these at all sites."
Chris Woodhall, E.ON’s Green Travel Manager |
Another excellent site for information relating to walking and cycling for work is Sustrans.
Sustrans provides Active Travel toolkits, downloadable promotional posters and a whole array of very useful information. This is a great source of information for businesses wishing to encourage employees to travel to work, and for local business meetings, actively.
