3pm weather update, Friday 17 December
Friday 17 December 2010
The vast majority of the rail network is not being seriously affected by snow and ice today although there has been some localised disruption in a handful of areas.
As of 2pm today, all but a few routes in Scotland are running a full timetable with 76% of trains arriving at their destination on time.
With forecasters predicting snow and ice into the early part of the weekend, the rail industry is working round the clock and will continue to do so over the coming days to run as many services as possible. A number of train companies are planning to run reduced timetables tomorrow.
Michael Roberts, Chief Executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), said: “Across the country, the majority of services have been running, although punctuality hasn’t been as high as it would be on a normal day. But, with snow and ice forecast over the weekend, train company staff have already been working flat out to keep as many trains running today and throughout the weekend as possible.’’
Robin Gisby, Director of Operations and Customer Services at Network Rail, said: “We have pulled in even more manpower and machinery to help tackle the bad weather ahead. Thousands of our people will be out overnight working to keep routes open, keep trains running to offer the best possible service we can.”
