Public tram service extended in Nottingham

Nottingham's tram service is to be extended after funding was made available to the project.

The move could help to reduce the carbon emissions of the city by encouraging commuters to travel via public transport and ditch their cars.

Transport minister Norman Baker announced that through cost savings, plans for extending the line to two areas - Chilwell/Beeston and Clifton - have been given the go-ahead.

"Line One of the Nottingham tram has proved to be a great success in encouraging people on to public transport," commented Mr Baker.

"These proposed extensions provide the opportunity to continue this success, and give people in the south of Nottingham quicker, more convenient access to the city centre, as well as helping to regenerate sections of the city."

Meanwhile, 14 drivers in the north-east of England have been issued a Nissan Leaf to take part in the Switch EV trial, which was launched in September 2010.

The electric vehicles have been allocated to organisations, councils, car clubs and individuals to provide information on living day-to-day with alternative fuel cars.
