Start/Stop technology 'saves 500,000 tonnes of CO2'

Tuesday 26 April 2011

If vehicles in London use Start/Stop technology, as much as 500,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions can be saved each year, research from Bosch shows.

Its research shows significant carbon savings by using the system, which is becoming increasingly common in cars from a variety of manufacturers.

Indeed, the company predicts that half of all new vehicles will have the technology in Europe by 2013.

Peter Fouquet, president of Bosch in the UK, said that a Start/Stop system can reduce a vehicle's CO2 emissions by eight per cent when driving in the city and up to 15 per cent in busy city traffic.

"Start/Stop is one exemplary fuel saving technology that further reduces CO2 emissions," he added.

The technology works by switching off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop such as at traffic lights. When the foot is taken off the brake, the engine then restarts.

Earlier this month, transport secretary Philip Hammond announced the creation of a Clean Air Fund for London, which will impose measures such as a no idling zone.
