Office accommodation

Flexible working is something that is happening in many organisations informally. Many however are looking at this more formally and have developed flexible working policies and have updated offices, technology and policies in a unified way offering substantial savings and business benefits much greater than office accommodation costs alone. CIPD research into employee engagement shows that flexible workers are happier workers and happier workers are more likely to be motivated to achieve results for their employers.

  • BT - the reduction in office space between 1993 and 2006 saves BT nearly $950 million per annum. Within that figure, BT’s 11,600 home workers (2006) saved the company over $136 million a year in accommodation costs and were on average 20 per cent more productive than their office based colleagues. For example, home working BT call centre operators handled up to 20% more calls, giving comparable or better quality response than their office-based colleagues. The remainder of the cost saving was down to office space rationalisation & hot-desking
  • As a result of home and flexible working policies, BT now has 97% of mothers returning to work at BT after having a baby. The national average is 47%.
  • Nationwide now has 93% of mothers returning to work and 76% of employees happy with their work/life balance. On top of that operating costs have fallen by £185 million in the past 3 years.
  • BAA Heathrow through its ‘Project Unity’ consolidated several offices and bringing in a hot-desking culture for its management offices allowed the release of accommodation resulting in savings of £400,000 per year
