Benefits to environment
The benefits of teleworking for the environment principally arise from the avoidance of commuting, the need to construct and maintain office buildings, and some reduction in business travel costs.
-
Not commuting means not using energy that creates a carbon footprint
-
Organisations that implement teleworking can see a reduction in their carbon footprint due to reduced office energy usage. The organisation may decide that people who work from home are not provided with a permanent office desk. Instead, there is a hot desking arrangement whereby they time-share desks. Fewer desks mean less occupied office space. Unoccupied office space does not have to be lit, heated or cooled. Knowledge Ability estimates an annual saving of 1.3 tonnes of CO2 from office energy emissions alone from an individual teleworking three days a week. Ultimately unused office space can be discarded, with even more reduction in carbon footprint
