Important policies relating to business travel

  • Business Travel Policy
the business travel policy should outline your organisation’s business travel ethos and guidance. We recommend that a business travel policy firstly considers not travelling as the preferred option – so using telecommucations as an alternative. However we fully acknowledge the vitally important role that business travel plays in an organisation and also in the wider economy
  • An example of a decision making hierarchy is shown here

  • When travel is vital
or deemed important to the business then the policy should set out employee entitlements and explain how travel should be booked and paid for. It should have the contact details of employees who can support and advise business travellers
    • The policy should explain to employees what they have to do prior to, during and after a business trip. It should also offer advice and guidance on getting the best deal and environmental considerations
  • Travel Safety Policy
businesses have a duty of care to their employees – and members of the public that they may come into contact with. We will explore duty of care in more detail later
  • Systems and Process
the success of a policy can only be judged if it is monitored. There should be systems in place to monitor compliance to policies and manage risks. A policy is ineffective if it that cannot be appraised.
