What we mean by ways2work

The concept of ways2work synthesizes two parallel themes of travelling more sustainably and travelling less in relation to our work. There are significant benefits of both of these approaches on People, Planet and Profit:

  • People

    • By reducing the amount of daily travel required through the use of information technology, enabling alternative work options such as remote or home working and job sharing, we can have greater balance in our lives which is better for us, our families and friends
    • By reducing the amount of business travel through using a variety of opportunities offered by technology we can cut the time we spend travelling and the stress associated with it
    • By participating more in active travel, such as walking, cycling and using public transport (which generally also involves some activity) rather than sedentary car travel, our physical and psychological health improves which also benefits our families, organisations and wider society
    • By travelling off peak through flexible working opportunities, we can avoid a crowded transport network. That’s good for our health and reduces our travel costs and time too
    • By car sharing, we can reduce our costs, be more sociable and share the driving which again is good for us
  • Planet

    • By travelling sustainably, either actively or through the use of less energy-intensive modes of transport the environment benefits
    • By travelling less, through flexible working or using technology to avoid travel, we are again helping the environment
    • By driving off peak or sharing cars, we are helping to reduce congestion which again has environmental benefits
  • Profit

    • By supporting active and sustainable travel your business will benefit through healthier, more productive employees
    • By offering flexible working packages your business can benefit in many ways from improved productivity and reduced absence to reduced accommodation costs
    • By investing in technology to reduce travel your business will reduce costs and benefit from increased productivity. You are also protecting your business against losses associated with travel disruption (snow, volcanic ash, accidents and major incidents, etc.)

Andrew Cassy
Travel Plan Manager, BT Adastral Park

"The main aim of the travel plan is to encourage employees to change the way in which we travel to work – for commuting as well as business travel. By promoting alternative travel modes and more sustainable and healthy ways to get to work, we’d like employees to think about making a small change to their daily travel. If we each decided to use a more sustainable mode of travel just one or two days a month, or avoiding travel altogether and flexiwork, will make a significant reduction in carbon, wasted time and cost savings.”
