Carphone Warehouse

Organisational challenge/context

Parking near the company's North Acton office is at a premium and promotion of alternatives was deemed essential for the business to continue to work effectively. Carphone Warehouse promoted behavioural change initiatives in order to:

  • Make staff aware of alternative travel options
  • Reduce CO2 to meet CSR commitments
  • Promote benefits of using mobile technology to other businesses as a means of changing travel behaviour
  • Reduce unnecessary costs associated with business travel

Sustainable travel intervention(s)

  • Car sharing management website developed with Liftshare (http://www.cpwjourneyshare.com) which can also calculate cost savings and other benefits
  • Corporate business travel policy implemented which prioritises public transport as first business travel option
  • Approximately 400 staff per week use company-funded shuttle bus between Birchwood Park and Birchwood Rail Station
  • Interest free loans are offered to staff for purchase of bicycles and public transport season tickets
  • Home working is supported and made available as a working option for members of staff where appropriate

Results/benefits

Primary benefits:

  • Reduction in single occupancy vehicle (SOV) travel of 7% and increase in public transport usage of 3% during 2000-2008 of 7%
  • Reduction in employer costs - staff savings through reduced parking costs associated with new parking charges in Ealing
