Environment Agency
Organisational challenge/context
As the leading public body for protecting and improving the environment in England and Wales it is essential for the Environment Agency to lead by example and they have therefore established a number of programmes designed to reduce their carbon footprint, not only through their business travel but also by actively encouraging their employees to adopt the same principles when travelling to and from work, in their everyday life and for pleasure.
Intervention(s)
A simple approach lies behind Agency's strategy: Don’t go, don’t drive and if you have to travel use the cleanest vehicle possible. With this approach the Agency utilises video, internet or audio-conferencing facilities to maximum effect.
The Agency uses public transport wherever possible and as a last resort and where public transport is impractical they use the vehicle with the lowest emissions i.e. their own pool cars, which have the lowest emissions or hire cars. Car sharing also plays a big part in their strategy.
