E.ON: Sustainable Travel at Sherwood Business Park

Background

The work E.ON undertakes on commuting and business travel is aiming to achieve a reduction in the number of single occupancy car journeys that are undertaken and where possible remove the need for travel altogether. E.ON's approach is comprehensive and holistic, with much attention given to the gap analysis and working with employees to define a travel plan that meets the real need. They have shown innovation in videoconferencing, with clear evidence of measurement and monitoring against targets and extensive range of initiatives.

Interventions

E.ON delivered a number of sustainable travel initiatives as part of its ongoing Green Travel programme at Sherwood Business Park for 3 reasons:

  • Business continuity and operational effectiveness
  • Manage demand for car parking spaces saving around £100,000 in avoid overflow costs
  • Save employees money

E.ON did this by understanding home locations, what employees wanted and a gap analysis on existing services local to the site. This information identified the need to improve bus links, links to local transport and carsharing, cycling and motorcycling at the site.

To achieve a shift in behaviour E.ON:

  • Increased the number of guaranteed and designated carsharing spaces from 47 to 137, (17.4% of the main car park capacity).
  • Run 3 company bus routes, where there is no public service or as a link from local transport nodes.
  • Extended the free pass scheme for colleagues living along the Trent Barton Rainbow 3 route, to include colleagues working in Nottingham.
  • Expanded the pass scheme for colleagues living along the Trent Barton Black Cat route.
  • Launched the new Premiere 2 service with ERDF money and council support serving the Sherwood Business Park.
  • Improved cycling and walking access through the creation of a footpath at the rear of the site linking to the local shared cycle/footpaths.
  • Provided a hybrid minibus to the Nottingham Tram and Robin Hood Line train services at Hucknall, making it easier for visitors and providing links for employees to Nottingham sites.
  • Promoted car sharing by providing a journey-matching tool (TravelShare) to enable colleagues to register journeys and find matches.
  • Expanded the TravelShare scheme to the whole business park with the support of the Highways Agency.
  • Reward Green Travellers with points for each day they travel sustainably to site.
  • Run regular Green Travel Surgeries and personal travel sessions to raise awareness and provide information to colleagues.
  • Continue to promote the Cycle to Work guarantee and cycle to work scheme.
  • Launched telemeet (VCoIP) to support a reduction in business mileage and to provide an alternative to Telepresence.

24% of people travel sustainably to work each day, as measured through the swipes at the reward kiosk, the manual count of works coach passengers by drivers and carsharers by security and the pass logging by Trent Barton.
