  • HBOS is associated with the West Yorkshire Travel Plan Network which supports employers from West Yorkshire in promoting more sustainable ways of travelling to work and reducing the number of people who drive alone

Walking and cycling:

  • Preferential parking for car sharers

Business travel:

  • Green Miles scheme to encourage staff to use video- or teleconferencing
  • Carbon calculator to show CO2 savings if travelling by air, rail or road
  • Green Angels initiative providing advice on reducing business travel

Fleet vehicles:

  • Essential company car users are only offered diesel or hybrid vehicles
  • Detailed advice on company website on green car purchase, driving and maintenance
  • Lex, their vehicles leasing business, offers clients measures for reducing environmental impact of their fleet

Flexible working:

  • Flexible working practices incorporated into the property strategy
  • Homeworking, compressed working and term-time working options offered
  • Flexible working and work-life balance initiatives combined to provide a high quality/high performing working environment

Results/benefits

  • Percentage of staff walking to work group-wide in 2008 rose to 7.6%
  • Number of staff taking up cycle scheme rose from 144 in 2006 to 522 in 2008
  • Number of applications for Metrocard loan increased over 5-year period from 136 (2004) to 736 (2008)
  • 23 million business miles saved since 2007 launch of Green Miles scheme
  • Carbon emissions profile of the car fleet has improved from 172.56 grams CO2 per km in January 2006 to 163.77 grams CO2 per km in December 2007
