Organisational challenge/context

The Vehicle Efficiency Project and the management of impacts (ISO14001) aims to reduce:

  • emissions from business travel and the ancillary vehicle fleet
  • The number of ancillary fleet vehicles
  • Transport costs and emissions.

The Travel Plan aims to reduce single occupancy car travel, commuting and business travel; whilst improving cycle facilities, car sharing schemes and use of public transport.

Intervention(s)

  • Vehicle Efficiency Project has 14 specific objectives around alternative vehicles, car sharing, travel booking, etc.
  • Creation of a Travel Hierarchy policy to define staff decisions regarding travel
  • Green and Healthy Transport Campaign week (8-12 March 2010), featuring Car Share postcode breakfasts, Energy Saving Trust's Smarter Driving Simulator,Bike Doctor Workshops at 5 MFRS sites, launch of Cycle to Work 2010, scheme trial bikes, Cycling Solutions Training and Assessment
  • Cycle to Work Guarantee Scheme 2010

Results/benefits

Vehicle Efficiency Project and Travel Plan only in first year, Green and Healthy Transport Campaign only took place in March 2010, so benefits difficult to quantify now, however:

  • Travel Plan won best Travel Plan award at Merseytravel conference (Oct 09)
  • High uptake on precious Cycle to Work schemes (around 200 each time)
  • Unquantified staff/ travel savings on video and audio conferencing
  • Safer commuting with Bike Doctor and Training
  • Contribution to CO2 reduction targets (to be evaluated April 2010)
  • Health benefits and linkage with Health Promotions team
  • Reputational benefits for MFRS.
