Organisational challenge/context
Travel is a very significant environmental impact of the University of Bradford with the travel related carbon footprint for fleet, commuting and business travel roughly equating to the carbon footprint of the gas and electricity use at around 15,000 tonnes CO2 per annum. Staff Business Travel is a very large cost to the institution.

Results/benefits
-
Since travel plan began at the University of Bradford in 2003 rates of single occupancy car use have dropped from 62-43% for staff and 21-14% for students. There have been associated rises in the use of more sustainable methods
-
Halted rise in spend on staff business travel – inflation normalised figures rose from £1,216 per FTE staff member in 2003/4 to £1,430 in 2006/7 – since then has dropped to £1,369 in 2008/9
-
Staff business travel spend is around £2million pounds per year and this figure has levelled off thus showing that the sustainable travel framework and technologies are working to reduce business travel
-
When staff productivity and time spent travelling is taken into account this slight drop is even more significant from a financial perspective as this is not taken into account with the pure travel spend data
