Car parking

Office parking is not free and its costs are generally underestimated. A typical surface level space costs an organisation £400 to £1,000 per year per space in running costs and £2,000 per space upwards in capital costs; this excludes land costs. Such running costs are: interest / amortisation of construction (or major maintenance), cleaning, lining, security, signing, landscaping, business rates etc. Multi-storey and underground car parks can cost several times these figures. Renting extra parking spaces in a town can cost upwards of £5 per day per space and, if renting offices, a typical extra cost for renting offices with generous parking provision can equate to £1,000 per year per space. Some organisations understand these costs and are acting to reduce them.

  • E.ON managed demand for car parking and saved around £100,000 in avoided overflow car parking costs
  • Lloyds Banking Group, as a result of promoting cycling and providing appropriate facilities, encouraged over 500 more colleagues to cycle to work regularly. The cycling facilities cost £180,000 however it is estimated that overflow parking would have cost over £500,000 a year.
  • Pinewood Studios by reduction of parking, supported by an all-encompassing travel plan, made additional space available for outdoor film, the construction of sets and the storage of scenery and props. This made a substantial difference to Pinewood Studio’s attractiveness and brought in additional income
  • Military Air Solutions - The average cost per employee of the travel plan was just over £43 – and this was offset against the costs of providing additional car parking costing around £2000 per space with an annual maintenance fee of £500
  • BAA Heathrow avoided the construction of an £8 million multi-storey car parking as a result of its Airport Carshare Scheme
