Why calculate and report work-related travel emissions

Transport accounts for 29% of the UK’s total carbon dioxide emissions (2006 Netcen Data). It is also the only major sector in which carbon emissions continue to rise. Almost 70% of UK transport emissions come from road transport and more than half of that is from cars. Personal car travel is the single biggest source of personal CO2 emissions in the UK (DECC 2009)

Out of all household car journeys, commuting accounts for 25% and business travel accounts for 13% of CO2 emissions making a total of 38% attributable to work-related travel. 69% of us drive to work and 80% of business journeys are undertaken by car.

So work-related travel is a significant source of emissions for many organisations and one which we need to address.

However many businesses have demonstrated that cutting their travel and transport related carbon emissions can deliver significant benefits – from the cost savings that arise from more efficient operations, to the contribution these can make to an organisation’s corporate social responsibility agenda.

These numerous benefits are worth the effort of measuring, calculating and reporting on carbon emissions – although it is acknowledged that this may present some challenges.

However a healthy business is a profitable businesses and reducing travel-related carbon emissions is good for people, planet and profit.
